The Thunder's star player scored the winning points deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their championship campaign with a narrow win over the Houston Rockets.

Last season's MVP scored 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, securing the titleholders a positive start.

Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defense," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."

Before the tip-off, the team's title banner was raised at their home court, while the players were presented with their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to prevent his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.

Miami's star picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
