English Football News: Mejbri Banned for Misconduct; City Boss Insists 'Defence Must Get Better'
In the latest top-flight news, a significant player was issued a significant suspension, a head coach has pointed out a player's errors to make an argument, and the Manchester City manager has called for backline betterment after a chaotic victory.
Mejbri Handed Four-Match Suspension and Fine
The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-game ban and a financial fine following improper behaviour in a recent match versus Leeds United. The governing body confirmed the player was referred a separate regulatory commission following allegations where he spat towards visiting fans around the 67-minute mark of a 2-0 win for Burnley.
An FA release said: “A disciplinary panel has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to misconduct in the Premier League match against Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that the player acted in breach of the laws of football or in an improper manner and/or engaging in offensive and/or unacceptable conduct through spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United fans.”
The statement continued, “Mejbri later accepted the allegation, with the panel handing down a four-match ban and £15,000 following proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for the sanction will be published at a later date.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the table, travel to 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.
Maresca Points to Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Prove an Argument
The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of experience is no a problem for his club, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing poorly in a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the youngest squad in the division, does not feel that inexperience was a factor in the setback. He made his case by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player on the pitch, who produced a mistake-riddled display in central defence.
“We always talk about a lack of experience when we fail to win,” Maresca said. “When we beat Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, nobody was mentioning older personnel. I know that when we don’t win, we are constantly looking for an explanation, but in my view the reason why we didn’t win against Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we were not at our best.”
He added, “Who was the most senior player for us in the match? It was Tosin. Was he any good? Therefore, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Must Get Better'
Pep Guardiola has insisted the champions have taken lessons from a midweek scare against Fulham with the game has now been forgotten. City held on for a 5-4 victory in a remarkable encounter at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with about 60 minutes gone.
This followed they fought off a fightback to win 3-2 in the previous fixture, it raised more questions about if they are the defensive steel required to mount a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” he commented. “Good learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, for every team, one must take onboard both good and bad performances and bad things and think of what's next.”
“Of course I am worried,” he admitted. “We are trying to analyse the cause, so as not to concede so many goals. After conceding three against Leeds, and the five by Fulham you can see our sides, correct? So, always we have done plenty of good things. Yet how many shots on target had Leeds ? Three? They scored two. That ratio is bad. How many shots on target for Fulham have? Five, six? So our ratio of shots conceded we can see is high. We have to improve.”
4. Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Deals
Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed contract negotiations with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. He joined from Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali has a deal that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
That has left Wilson free to prioritise talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s a year later, the club's efforts are being treated with some urgency.
“My first three or four days after starting was when I found that Sandro’s deal was significantly better than the one I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is well known that the club would want to extend Tino’s deal and we would want to extend Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”
Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the home game with Burnley on Saturday, with the defender likely to remain sidelined for at least a further period.
Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
West Ham head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to start for the side play Brighton on Sunday, having completed a ban for the red card against Liverpool.
“It is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am confident it will not happen again as he personally admitted his mistake. We discussed it in the dressing room. I believe the matter is closed and it will not happen again.”
Nuno also acknowledged the significant strain on his side, currently 18th before Saturday's matches. “We cannot ignore it,” he said. “It is a reality. We have to confront it. We're battling for our top-flight status. We cannot shy away from it.”
6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Deputy Merino
The Spanish midfielder could continue as Arsenal’s central striker despite the club's usual strikers are fit again. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency No 9 because of injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s first goal versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for the second goal during a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
