British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further countries to its official alert roster about the dangers of methanol poisoning from adulterated spirits.

This updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Just recently, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, in response to several serious events like the fatal loss of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?

Methanol is a harmful substance commonly employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not meant for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the creation of beverages, licensed producers reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the refining procedure.

Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Government Recommendations for Travellers

Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer stated that every traveler should know the indicators of methanol poisoning.

"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, choose trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister advised.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's way worse than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."

The full roster of destinations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
